In 1969, Ford introduced a limited production model to the Mustang line. The Boss 429 was the most expensive and most powerful Mustang ever produced to that time. The 1969 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Coupe was offered for sale at the 2006 RM Auction held in Monterey, California. This car is powered by a 428 cubic-inch engine with 735 cfm 4-V Holley, R-Code. The transmission is a C-6 with Detroit Locker. The Mach 1 was a new model for 1969 nearly five years into the iconic Pony Car's lifecycle and was the first Ford-development which didn't involve Carroll Shelby. There鈥檚 Whisper, Engage, and Unbridled. Each mode will alter power delivery and response, steering feel, lighting, sound, and graphical animations. Whisper is the calm and serene experience, Engage turns up the wick for a sporty, dynamic drive, and Unbridled as the name suggests unleashes all the performance the Mach-E has to offer. They鈥檝e even tuned the whine of the electric motor drawing inspiration from movies like Blade Runner and even Formula-E. We were taken for short rides in a mid-range Mach-E premium, and I can鈥檛 really say if I noticed too much of what they were talking about. If you鈥檝e driven an EV before the sound here isn鈥檛 all that different but you do a hear a slight warble in the background that gets deeper with speed.

A center console houses a Hurst shifter, original AM radio, and heating and airflow levers. Nice wood veneer is within the 2 鈥渟woops鈥?creating driver and passenger sides of the dash.

Drivers side housing essential gauges, and passenger side a clock. Fronting the dash is a factory Rim Blow steering wheel with walnut inlay. A shout out to the headliner which actually has an interesting pattern affixed. A totally rebuilt and restored 351ci V8 sits inside a pristine engine bay. Correct blue block and air cleaner are seen, and a Holly 4-barrel with an aluminum intake replace the original coded 2-barrel. A 4-speed top loader manual transmission replaces the original 3-speed and pushes power to a 9鈥?3.00 geared rear. Making it very easy to spot a good restoration, the underside presents beautifully. Original floor pans, and rocker boxes, and new disc brakes on front. Not original in the true sense of the word, however new parts replace the originals in key areas, so one now has added reliability. Beautiful color combination, and very nice interior combine to beckon you to sit in and go for a ride. Careful, it may be hair raising, but it will definitely be eventful and impressive! Imagine Ford, buoyed by the Le Mans success of the GT40 beginning in 1966, decided to take on Ferrari in the showroom in addition to the track. How would a fastback 鈥?9 Mustang look if it morphed to the proportions of the world-beating, mid-engine GT40? Retired engineer Terry Lipscomb wanted to find out. After they tried various vent, intake, and quarter-window shapes, Mike and Terry honed in on a GT40-inspired design they felt evoked the original essence of the Mach 1 Mustang. This is how they did it. The GT40 got its name from the FIA-mandated minimum height of 40 inches. After dropping the roof and sinking the windshield into the cowl, the Mach 40 stands at just a touch over 43 inches tall. Close enough for us. Whether it was Terry Lipscomb鈥檚 original vision, Mike Miernik鈥檚 rendering, the tremendous sheetmetal work that Colton Hardison and the crew at Eckert鈥檚 Rod & Custom put in, or a combination of all three, the lines look good from every angle. That isn鈥檛 something you can say about many cars that have been modified to this extent, especially cars from this era.
