Correction Procedure

Issue:

Particularly on early production S-TYPE vehicles, the remote possibility exists that the needles of the speedometer and/or tachometer may become

jammed at full scale. This bulletin provides a simple rectification procedure.

Background:

Every time the battery is connected, the instrument cluster performs a full sweep of the gauges. This is a deliberate feature of the Instrument Pack,

intended to return any needle which may have "fallen over" during transit to its correct indication. The needles are tip-heavy, and have no "hold" at

zero indication. As a result, a needle may fall to the full scale position. The logic of the circuitry is to restore the needle to zero by the shortest route,

which may result in a needle being driven onwards where the needle may stick at full scale, partly obscured by the mask that surrounds the

instrument. This situation can occur when the battery is disconnected and reconnected, particularly if an initial temporary connection of the battery is

made which initiates the full sweep routine, followed by a disconnection before the routine is complete. If a further reconnection is now made it is

possible that needles may have already stopped near the full scale indication, and become stuck as the full sweep routine is initiated for the second

time.

The situation can also occur if it is necessary to remove or replace an instrument cluster.

To minimize the likelihood of this condition occurring, always make a "clean" reconnection when a battery has been disconnected for any reason.

Action:

If and S-TYPE vehicle exhibits stuck instrument needles as described above, perform the following procedure:

1. Disconnect the battery. Wait 10 seconds.

2. While a second technician taps on the instrument cluster to free the needle, make a clean reconnection of the battery.

3. If necessary repeat 1 and 2 above.

Note:

Do not consider replacing an instrument pack for the symptoms described until the above procedure has been followed.
