Rear Park Aid Inoperative/Warning Lamp On - Repair Procedure

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

S-TYPE VIN: L00600 - N13088

Model Year: 2000 - 2004

CONDITION SUMMARY:

THE REAR PARK AID IS INOPERATIVE, WARNING LAMP ON, AND/OR SOUNDER OPERATES CONTINUOUSLY

Situation:

A condition where corrosion of the parking aid module harness connector and terminals may be due to water ingress into the luggage compartment.

NOTE:

Bulletin S501 - 09V2 MUST be carried out if any evidence of water intrusion is found prior to performing the Repair Procedure outlined in this

bulletin.

Action:

If a customer should express the above concern, repair the vehicle by carrying out a lower level of repair through the use of an overlay harness

instead of the complete vehicle harness by following the Repair Procedure outlined below.

Parts

WARRANTY:

NOTE:

Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only.

Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

NOTE:

The repair overlay harness XR8 57783 is based on the 2003MY - 2004MY body harness wiring and wiring colors. You should be aware of the

following specific differences when using the harness on the two applicable S TYPE VIN ranges. Also refer to the relevant rear parking aid

wiring diagram in the electrical guide section JJM 10 38 16/10 and the wiring harness repair guide JTP 586 within GTR.

CHANGES

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 212

The following functions have been modified since the last release:

Integrity Test

It is now possible to disable the integrity test, reducing the overall diagnostic tic time.

Vehicle CM identification

This function is now available within the Vehicle Set-up.

CM CONFIGURATION

The PDU contains configuration software for a significant number of control modules (CM) on the S-TYPE. The following tables provide data on

what level of configuration will be required under differing circumstances. The CMs will require configuring using the PDU in the case a service

replacement is installed.

The control modules will require configuration in the event being fitted as part of an accessory kit.

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 213

The control module will require configuring in the event of DTCs C1277 and C1278 (steering wheel angle) being cleared.

VID BLOCK PROGRAMMING

The Vehicle identification block (VID block) is a section of memory within the powertrain control module used to store data about all of the control

module configurations on the vehicle. This data is not used by the vehicle itself, and therefore failure to program the VID block will not affect the

vehicle's operation. The VID Block data is used by PDU during its diagnostic and configuration routines to gather data about the vehicle.

PCM ID

The PCM Identifier is a unique code used to synchronize the PCM, Instrument pack and Steering column lock control module. If all three modules

are not synchronized then the vehicle will not start.

NEW WARNING MESSAGE

A new general warning message has been added to the start of all diagnostic routines. This message will appear whenever the PDU is switched on or

the diagnostic application is reloaded from the base station. Specific warning messages will still be provided within the diagnostic routines when

required.

DIAGNOSIS OF CONTINUOUS CRANKING PROBLEMS

The starter test routine for S-TYPE provides diagnostic procedures for continuous cranking problems. Unlike the majority of other applications this

routine assumes that the vehicle is not continuously cranking at the time the test starts. The test will operate correctly with either of the following two

conditions applied.

^ Starter relay removed

^ Battery supply strap to the starter motor removed

ACTION:

Ensure that this software is installed immediately. Retain the previous issues in a secure place as a backup CD-ROM in the event the new software is

damaged. Use JTP 627/5 for diagnosing 1995-97 MY Sedan Range, 1997-ON MY XK8, 1998- ON MYV8 XJ Series and 2000 MY S-TYPE.

Note:

When entering a VIN for S-TYPE, you must enter the last 6 characters, not just the last 5 numbers. Without the letter, the PDU will interpret the

Battery - Quiescent Drain Current - Specifications

Remove and destroy Bulletin S414-01, dated 6/99. Replace with this Bulletin. The entire test procedure has been revised.

Issue:

This bulletin provides specifications for quiescent current drains from the vehicle battery, as well as a procedure for measuring them using a digital

volt/ohmmeter (DVOM).

Action:

CHECKING QUIESCENT DRAIN CURRENT

Note:

The four (4) Switched Power Relays in the Rear Distribution Box will stay active until the last SCP message is sent. This process will last

up to 30-40 minutes. Opening any of the doors or the trunk during the Quiescent Drain Test will cause the timer to reset and delay the shut

down of the relays. It is also recommended that the battery isolation device remain attached to the battery and NOT be removed until the

vehicle is ready for delivery to the retail customer. This will prevent unnecessary drain of the battery and inconvenience to the customer.

Record the following system settings prior to disconnecting the battery so that they may be reset to the customers preferred setting.

^ Clock time setting

^ Clock 12/24 hour setting

^ CD compress mode (if equipped. Radio must be in CD mode to check this setting.)

^ Navigation volume defaults to 14 (if equipped)

^ Voice feedback volume defaults to 14 (if equipped - voice training is not lost).

^ Gear box mode

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 93

^ Radio presets AM/FM

^ Compass calibration and zone setting

^ Navigation memory will be retained if the battery has not been disconnected longer than 24 hrs.

The trip computers (both A & B) will reset to zero, these however cannot be returned to prior readings.

Use a DVOM as follows to measure quiescent drain current:

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable and check the battery off-load voltage. If the voltage is below 12.5 volts, recharge the battery and retest

the voltage. If OK, reconnect the negative cable.

2. Rotate the ignition switch to position II and leave for 30 seconds, then turn the ignition off and remove the key.

3. Ensure that the exterior light switch is turned off, the radio is switched off, the mobile phone (if equipped) is also turned off. Ensure that the

interior light switches are turned off.

4. Close all the doors, and the hood. With the trunk open, move the latch to the closed position. Disconnect the trunk lights.

5. Disconnect battery negative cable. Connect a DVOM between the negative cable and battery to perform the test. The vehicle's alarm system

and radio will default to active when the battery is reconnected. Press the key-fob transmitter to disarm the alarm. Turn the radio off.

6. Measure the quiescent current drain. The expected readings are as shown.

Note:

All the above figures are approximate and can vary from vehicle to vehicle.

However, after 45 minutes the quiescent drain of any vehicle equipped with Jaguar-approved accessories should be no greater than 30

milliamps.

If the test is carried out with the security system in its armed state, the drain should be approximately the same as the readings above, but

there will be a pulse to 46 milliamps for 0.25 second when the LED flashes.

Always ensure that a 'clean' connection is made when connecting the battery. If a temporary contact is made, disconnect, wait 60 seconds,

then reconnect cleanly

Limp-Home Mode - DTC P1121 and/or P1632 - AJ27 Engine - Adjust Throttle Cable

Issue:

Some of the above vehicles may default to limp home mode because the throttle cable is improperly adjusted. The condition will be accompanied by

diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1121 and/or P1632 being stored in the memory of the Engine Control Module (ECM).

Action:

In case of a customer complaint of limp home mode on the above vehicles, use the PDU to check if DTC P1121 and/or P1632 is stored in the

(ECM). If so, use the PDU to clear the DTC and then reset the adjustment of the throttle cable using the following procedure:

Note:

The following procedure supersedes the adjustment procedure included in SRO 19.20.06 published in all versions of JTIS up to and including

JTIS 8. The active voltage reading for PPS 2 should range from 0.8 V at closed throttle to 2.7 V at WOT instead of the range given in the

electrical guide.

1. Open the hood and place covers over the fenders.

2. Load the PDU with Powertrain Data Logger.

3. Disconnect the PDU/MPA from the base station and connect it to the vehicle.

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 208

4. With "Disable Network Integrity Test - Yes/No" displayed on the PDU screen, select YES.

5. With new menu displayed, select "Engine Management".

6. Turn the ignition switch on.

7. On Data Logger, clear selected PIDs (Parameter IDentification), then select PPS 11 (Pedal Demand Sensor 1) and PPS2 (Pedal Demand

Sensor 2).

8. On V8 XJ Series models only. remove the bulkhead covers on both sides and the engine compartment rear cover.

9. On all vehicles, start recording data.

10. Cut, remove and discard the ratchet strap that secures the throttle cable to the bracket.

11. Release the threaded throttle cable retainer from the abutment bracket. Ensure that there is no tension on the cable.

12. Record the voltage readings for both sensors - PPS 11 and PPS2.

13. Partially insert the throttle cable adjustment nut into the abutment bracket.

14. Recheck the voltages for PPS 11 and PPS2.

If the voltages are higher than the readings in step 12, continue with step 15 If the voltages are the same as in step 12, continue with step 16.

15. Rotate the threaded retainer clockwise (as viewed from the front of the vehicle) until the same voltage readings are indicated as in Step 12.

Continue to turn through a partial turn until the sides of the threaded retainer are vertical. Turn through an additional 900. Then fully insert the

threaded retainer into the bracket. Continue with step 17.

16. If the voltages measured are the same, rotate the threaded retainer counterclockwise until the indicated voltage begins to increase. Then rotate

the threaded retainer clockwise through a partial turn until the sides are vertical. Turn through additional 90°. Then fully insert the threaded

retainer into the bracket. Continue with step 17.

17. Install a new tie strap on secure the threaded retainer to the abutment bracket.

18. Depress and release the throttle pedal through its full travel 20 times to 'settle' the cable. Check that the voltage readings now shown remain

the same as those shown in Step 15 or 16.

19. Check and adjust the throttle pedal stop using the PDU. This requires the PDU to be returned to the base station. Select Vehicle Set-up, then

Engine Setup. Connect PDU to vehicle, then select throttle stop setup.

20. If the required throttle opening cannot be achieved due a lack of adjustment range, a shorter length throttle stop stud may be necessary.

Measure the distance of the length of the hexagonal section (points A and B, Illustration 1). Select the next shortest mounting stud. Refer to

the Parts Information for the total of 4 different length studs are available.

Note:

It is unlikely that a new throttle stop mounting stud will be necessary since this component is hand selected and installed in production where a

test of full throttle has been performed and passed. Order parts on an as-required basis only.

21. On V8 XJ Series models only, reinstall the engine compartment rear cover and the bulkhead covers on both sides.

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 209

22. On all vehicles, remove the fender covers and close the hood.

23. Switch the ignition OFF. Disconnect the PDU from the vehicle and return the PDU to the base station.

Memory Systems - Driver's Seat, Steering Column, Door Mirrors - Diagnostics

Issue:

This Technical Bulletin provides diagnostic procedures for the memory system which controls the seat, steering column, and door mirror memory.

In most cases, a memory recall problem is not caused by the memory system itself. There is often an electrical or mechanical fault with another

component, resulting in the memory not recalling as expected.

Action:

Information to aid with diagnosing faults

Note:

This bulletin includes a copy of the Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) ref 2101 from the Electronic Product Quality Report (EPQR) system. The

information in the FAQ may be needed to help diagnose the faults.

Please read the "Key elements of memory systems" for help on what memory functions the vehicle has. The table includes information on the

modules used to store memory, the controls used to store and recall memory, and the easy entry / exit function.

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 294

When the customer first reports the concern it is recommended that you complete a "customer memory system questionnaire" to record all the details

of the issue. A copy of the questionnaire is shown.

Whenever possible identify the exact axis that is not recalling correctly, as it will be needed to help identify the cause of the fault. You should also

identify if the memory fails to recall correctly during:

1. Easy entry/easy exit mode.

2. Memory recall from drivers door switch pack.

3. Memory recall from key fob.

4. Programming of memory system.

Key elements of memory Systems.

Memory system - customer questionnaire.

FAQ 2101

How to check if the easy entry / easy exit function is working correctly see - Flow chart 1.

Things to know about the easy/exit function:

1 If the seat is within approximately 50 mm of its rear most travel the seat may not move during easy entry/exit mode, as this position is outside

the defined operating range for this function.

2 If the key fob has not been programmed with memory settings, and it is used to unlock the vehicle, the seat and steering column will recall to

the last position you set and not the memorized position.

3 If any of the manual switch packs (directional controls) are operated during easy entry/exit mode the function will cease.

Diagnosis A - One or more axis does not move correctly when operating the applicable switch- pack

If this happens the problem may not be related to the memory system. If one axis does not recall correctly it may be caused by a mechanical or

electrical problem with that part of the system rather than memory recall.

Check points:

1 If a complete system will not move then check the relevant fuses.

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 298

2 Chaffed or damaged harnesses.

3 Pins backed out of connectors.

4 Poor connections to motors, potentiometers, and modules.

5 Short or open circuits.

6 Motors being strained or overloaded.

7 Bent, buckled, or damaged mechanisms.

8 Worn mechanisms.

9 Poor connections to the controlling switch pack.

10 witch pack buttons not operating correctly.

11 Check the type of seat that is fitted - perhaps the customer thinks the seat has more movements than it actually has.

Diagnosis B - No memory recall from the switch pack

If, after pressing the memory recall button on the switch pack the seat, door mirrors, steering column, and head-restraint did not move at all, the

memory system does not appear to be working.

Note:

Look at each part of the system carefully for any signs of movement - if part of a system moves even slightly then the memory system is trying to

recall the stored settings. If this is the case the memory system is working, but not all positions are recalling correctly.

Things to check if there is no memory recall at all:

1 Is the driver door switch pack faulty? (Look for buttons sticking, water ingress, do the memory recall buttons appear to work OK)

2 Are the fuses for the memory system OK?

3 Has memory been programmed to a switch pack button?

4 Is the driver door module working correctly?

5 Are the connections and hamesses to the driver door module OK?

6 Is the BPM working?

Diagnosis C - One or more axis does not return to the memorized position

If at least one axis moves when the memory is recalled, either from the driver door switch pack or the key fob, then the memory system is working.

The problem is therefore a mechanical or electrical problem with the affected axis, or a problem with one of the modules.

Note:

It is not possible for a module to intermittently loose its memory and then re-gain it. Intermittent memory recall problems will be caused by

something other than the memory system.

Check points:

1 A chaffed or damaged harness.

2 Loose or backed out pins to modules and the corresponding harnesses connectors.

3 Poor connections to motors or potentiometers.

4 Potentiometers not functioning correctly - use data logger to check the output of the potentiometers.

5 Potentiometer may be out of range this may happen if a memory position is towards the maximum travel of an axis.

6 Poor connections to switch packs.

7 Short or open circuits on harnesses.

8 Physical damage or wear of mechanical components such as slides, linkages, or gears.

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 299

Diagnosis D - The memory system will not store the required positions (no confirmation chime from the system)

When programming the memory system, a chime should be heard when the "M" memory button is pressed to confirm that the memory has been

stored.

If this does not happen check:

All conditions required to program the memory system are correct. Refer to "other sources of information" on where to find details on programming

the memory system.

If the conditions have been met diagnosis of the components will be required.

Check points:

1 Connections to the driver door switch pack.

2 Correct operation of the switch pack buttons.

3 Connections to the driver front door module.

4 Harness integrity to the switch pack and door module.

5 Connections to the body processor module.

6 Correct operation of the BPM.

Diagnosis E - Key fob does not recall memory settings

This section deals with the key fob not recalling any memory positions - the seat, steering column, door mirrors, and head restraints do not move at

all. If this is the case it may be a key fob issue rather than a memory issue.

Check points:

1 Does the locking and security system work correctly? If it does not it may indicate that the SLM is the cause of the problem.

2 Has the key fob been programmed with memory setting?

3 When programming the fob does the vehicle give a chime to confirm the memory has been assigned to the fob?

4 Is the key fob battery OK?

Other sources of information to aid diagnosis:

WDS can be used in data logger or guided diagnostics modes to help pinpoint the source of concern.

Key elements of memory Systems on S-TYPE vehicles

FAQ Memory System Setting S-Type

Question: The memory system on S-TYPE is not functioning correctly.

Answer

Before any repair is carried out it is suggested that the memory system is checked to ensure it is set up correctly. This document outlines how the

system is designed to operate on S-TYPE.

S-TYPE memory system set up procedure

A. Storing a driving position in memory using the driver door switch pack

1. Set the driving position as required (Column, Seat and exterior mirrors)

2. Press the "memory" button on the driver door switch pack

3. A red light will illuminate on the switch pack

4. Within 5 seconds of the light coming on, press one of the two numbered memory buttons (1, 2) located on the driver door switch pack.

5. A chime will sound to indicate the memory has been stored on the selected memory button and the light will go out.

6. If the ignition is on (position II) the instrument pack message center will also advise the settings have been saved.

7. To set a second setting repeat steps 1-6 using the unused memory location.

B. Programming the key fob to recall a memorized driving position S-TYPE

Memorized driving positions can be recalled from the key fob when the unlock button is pressed. The key fob must be programmed to do this.

Method:

1. Set the driving position as required (Column, Seats, Exterior mirrors)

2. Press the "memory" button on the driver door switch pack (The red light on the switch pack will illuminate)

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 302

3. Within 5 seconds press any button on Key-Ring transmitter.

4. Press the desired memory location 1 or 2 on the switch pack

5. Repeat steps 1-4, to program the other transmitter using the unused memory location.

Once the key fob is programmed (to memory 1 or 2), there is no need to re-program the key fob if a new driving position is stored in the same

memory position.

C. How to clear the memory recall function from the key fob (S-TYPE)

1. Press the memory button.

2. While the memory set light is illuminated press any button on the key ring transmitter (except panic button were fitted)

3. Then press the memory button again.

D. Recalling memorized driving positions (S-TYPE)

Recall of memorized driving positions can be performed either by using the driver door switch pack or the key fob. There are some conditions that

must be met for the system to work when the recall is selected:

^ The gear selector must be in "park" or "neutral" for automatic vehicles.

^ For manual transmission the vehicles handbrake must be "On".

^ To recall from switch pack select desired memory recall button 1 or 2 the column, mirrors and seat will move to programmed position

^ To recall from Key Fob, the Fob must have been programmed as previously stated, seats column and mirrors will move on pressing the unlock

button on transmitter.

E. Easy Entry / Exit Function (S-TYPE)

^ This function will only operate when the steering column adjustment switch is set to the "Auto" position.

^ This function DOES NOT affect the functionality of the memory system or the manual movement of the seat, mirrors or steering column.

^ If the customer has selected "Auto" and the steering column is in the process of moving to the easy entry / exit position, using the seat or column

adjustment switches will stop the easy entry / exit function until it's next use.

^ The easy entry / exit function will operate whether the car is opened with the key or the key fob, and the key fob DOES NOT need to be

programmed for this function to work.

^ The function will also operate when inserting the key into the ignition switch, removing the key from the ignition switch.

^ The seat will only move back 50 mm from its rearward stored memory position for easy exit, and then only if the seat is not already at its most

rearward point of travel at this point the seat will not move.

NOTE:

If all the above settings are correct please contact dealer technical support to log this as a seat memory failure. You should provide dealer

technical support with:

1. All vehicle details.

2. Customer description of concern.

3. Technician's findings including all fault codes as derived from WDS diagnostics.

4. What, if any repairs/parts changes have been done either now or in the past.

Difficulty Inputting Commands - Voice Activated Control System - Guidelines

Issue:

Some owners of S-TYPE vehicles may have a concern with the Voice Activated Control System not operating correctly, particularly when inputting

telephone commands. A recent investigation conducted with owners identified that the problems were due to incorrect voice commands.

The customer must be asked to demonstrate the concern in detail. This will allow you to determine whether the customer is using correct terminology

during a command input, or whether there may be other issues.

Action:

As mentioned, the Voice Activated Control System issues revolve around the phone command inputs.

A typical example of an incorrect phone command would be:

2000 Jaguar S-Type (X200) V6-3.0L Page 133

"Phone - Enter..." then waiting for a prompt.

Because the customers were not continuing with the first part of the number, the Voice Activated Control System did not recognize this as a valid

command and responded with the message "Command not recognized".

On 2000 MY-on vehicles the commands should be entered as "Phone - (Enter/Dial/Store) - 123456" as one continuous statement.

Example:

Phone - Enter - 411 then add more digits in 3 - 5 digit groups after the prompts.

Phone - Store - 1 201 818-8500

Phone - Dial - 1 201 818-8500

Advise customers that are using incorrect terminology, that the Voice Activated Control System will only understand and react correctly if the exact

phrase is used.

Note:

For all terminology issues, customers should refer to the quick reference card within the Voice Activation Handbook.
