Selector Lever (Gear Shift) Interlock - Service Release Procedure

Issue:

On 2000 MY-ON S-TYPE vehicles, the situation could occur that the gear selector lever remains locked in the 'P' position. While a discharged

battery might be the primary cause of such a concern, other electrical malfunctions could also result in the same situation.

The following procedure will allow manual release of the interlock mechanism, allowing 'N' to be selected so that the vehicle may be moved or

towed.

Action:

1. Pull hand brake into tully up position.

2. Release the hand brake trim snap.

3. Lift center console lid.

Caution:

When raising/lowering the upper console, be careful not to damage the plastic trim around the selector opening.

4. Lift upper console from the rear to gain access to the selector lever interlock manual release (Illustration 1). Recover the 7 clips that secure the

upper console to the lower console for reassembly.

5. Slide hand under the right side of console and raise manual release plunger (Illustration 1).

6. While holding plunger in raised position, move gear selector lever from 'P' to 'N'.

7. Reinstall the 7 clips onto the upper console and reassemble once the vehicle has been repaired.
