Service Action: Hood Safety-Catch Spring



AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:



XJ (X351) VIN: V00001-V10027



Model Year: 2010 - 2011



CONDITION SUMMARY:



Situation:



A small number of warranty reports have been received where difficulty in opening the hood was identified as the concern. Investigations revealed



that the hood spring retention cap was broken and the spring that lifts the hood was subsequently loose. Hood latch functionality is not impacted by



this condition; however, should a hood be closed in the failed state, access to the secondary hood latch release lever will be restricted.



Action:



Dealers are required to HOLD all affected vehicles in the VIN range above that are in their control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new or



used vehicle sale pending completion of the rework action detailed in this Service Action.



For vehicles in dealer inventory, this Service Action should be performed in conjunction with the vehicle Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) and on all



vehicles prior to customer handover. Vehicles within the affected VIN range and already in the hands of owners should be updated at the earliest



convenience.

Warranty claims should be submitted quoting the Program Code K084 and the relevant Option Code. As Option Codes are used, there is no



requirement to enter parts or labor; these are shown for information only. The Option Code which contains drive in / drive out may only be claimed



if the vehicle is brought back into the workshop for this action alone to be undertaken.



This Service Action is valid for a limited time only and will expire on 30 November 2012. All Warranty claims prior to this date must be submitted



for payment within 30 days of completion of the repair.



REPAIR PROCEDURE



SECURE SAFETY-CATCH SPRING / REPLACE HOOD LATCH



WARNING:



The hood latch spring may suddenly release from the hood latch. Ensure that care is taken when carrying out the following procedure. Failure to



follow this instruction may result in personal injury.



WARNING:



Ensure suitable eye protection equipment is used during this procedure.



CAUTION:



Ensure the hood is opened slowly after releasing the hood latch.



CAUTION:



Stand to side of the hood, wherever possible at arms length away from spring mechanism, when opening the hood after releasing the secondary latch



handle.



1. Carefully, open the hood gradually only enough to insert a suitable piece of wood. (Figure 1)



CAUTION:



Stand to side of the hood, wherever possible at arms length away from spring mechanism, when inserting the piece of wood.



2. Insert a suitable piece of wood under the hood latch. (Figure 1)

Stand to side of the hood, wherever possible at arms length away from spring mechanism, when installing the cable tie.



3. Install a cable tie through the spring and around the hood latch. (Figure 2)



4. Fully open the hood.



5. Remove the piece of wood.



CAUTION:



Stand to side of the hood, wherever possible at arms length away from spring mechanism, when removing the secondary latch from the hood.



CAUTION:



The cable tie MUST remain on the displaced hood latch.



6. Remove the hood latch: (Figure 3)



^ Use a suitable marker to mark the fitted position of the hood latch.



^ Remove the three Torx bolts.



7. Install the new hood latch.



^ Loosely install the three Torx bolts.



^ Align the hood latch to the marked position.



^ Tighten the three Torx bolts to 9Nm (6.6lbf ft).

Headlamp Internal Condensation



AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE



CONDITION SUMMARY:



HEADLAMP INTERNAL CONDENSATION STANDARDS



Situation:



This 'information only' bulletin is to inform Dealers of Jaguar's acceptance standards relating to the levels of condensation that may occur in the



headlamps. A 'misting' on the inside surface of the headlamp lens may be caused by natural condensation that can be expected under certain



atmospheric conditions. Certain levels of condensation are deemed acceptable by Jaguar.



NOTE:



Incorrect installation of a headlamp bulb cover, following bulb replacement, can lead to condensation forming on the interior surface of the



headlamp lens. If incorrect installation of a bulb cover is determined to be the cause of the condensation, steps should be taken to dry out the lamps



and ensure all covers are correctly installed. Condensation levels should be monitored to allow natural dissipation of the condensation.

Should a customer express a concern for headlamp condensation, refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin for an explanation of Jaguar



standards regarding headlamp condensation and additional steps to resolve the customer's concern.

REPAIR PROCEDURE



HEADLAMP CONDENSATION STANDARDS



NOTE:



Atmospheric air containing water can enter the headlamp. When temperature and pressure conditions are conducive, condensation can occur.



When condensation occurs, a thin film of water vapor 'mist' can form on the inside surface of the headlamp lens. Modern headlamps are not sealed



tightly and are designed to equalize changes in pressure through open vents *- two vents per lamp on XK, four vents per lamp on XF.*



During a period of normal headlamp operation the thin mist of condensation should clear, dissipating through the vents, as the lamp heats up.



Condensation should typically clear from the pocket areas of the headlamp lens when the headlamp low and high beam functions are turned 'on' with



the engine running for a 30 minute period.



DETERMINE IF HEADLAMP CONDENSATION IS WARRANTABLE



NOTE:



Due to different packaging conditions on opposing sides of the vehicle, the amount of condensation within the lamps may differ. The rate at which



condensation clears will also differ. The lamps should be left 'on' for the duration of the recommended drying time, regardless of whether one lamp



has cleared ahead of the lamp on the opposing side of the vehicle. The hood should be left open to maximize air flow around the headlamp



assemblies.



1. Open the hood.



2. Ensure that all of the headlamp bulb covers are correctly installed and secure and that the rubber breathers are in place, on each headlamp



assembly.



3. Start the engine.



4. Turn the headlamp 'high beam' function 'ON'.



5. Leave the headlamp 'high beams' on with the engine running for at least 30 minutes.



NOTE:



Headlamps with only light misting on the interior surface of the lens should not be replaced under warranty.



NOTE:

6. After the 30 minute period, if any of the following conditions are confirmed, the headlamp assembly should be replaced.

^ Large water droplets are present on the interior surface of the headlamp lens. (Figure 1)



^ Drip marks or streaks are present in the film of condensation on the interior surface of the headlamp lens. (Figure 2)



^ A thick mist is covering a majority of the interior surface of the headlamp lens and obstructs the view of the interior of the lamp. (Figure 3)



^ There is evidence of standing water within the headlamp unit.

CONDITION SUMMARY:



Situation:



The engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0411 stored in the Engine Control



Module and no restricted performance experienced. The DTC is able to be cleared, but no root cause is likely to be identified. This may be caused



by the calibration indicating an error with pump pressure or check valve operation where none exists.



CAUTION:



If DTC P0411 is present after performing the Repair Procedure outlined below, the ECM diagnosis of this fault is correct and must be



investigated further.



NOTE:



If the vehicle has previously had an ECM software update as part of the Repair Process outlined in Technical Bulletins JTB00179 or K050 and



DTC P0411 is present with no fault found, update the ECM software as per the Repair Procedure outlined below.



Action:



In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to update the ECM software.

REPAIR PROCEDURE



UPDATE THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE



CAUTION:



A Jaguar-approved Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis / module programming.



CAUTION:



Ensure all ignition 'ON' / ignition 'OFF' requests are carried out; failure to perform these steps may cause damage to control modules in the



vehicle.



1. Connect the Jaguar-approved Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle battery.



* NOTE:



IDS must be loaded with IDS-DVD121_V6.06 or later and Calibration File 35 or later.*



2. Connect the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) to the vehicle and begin a new Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) session.



3. Follow the on-screen prompts, allowing SDD to read the VIN and identify the vehicle.



4. Select Diagnosis from the Session Type selection screen.



5. Select the Selected Symptoms tab, and then select:



^ Electrical > Instruments > Warning Lamps > Engine Malfunction Lamp > Lamp illuminated



6. Select 'continue'.



7. Select the 'Recommendations' tab.



8. From the Recommendations tab, select Run to configure the 'Powertrain control module'



^ Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.



9. Exit the current session.

An oil leak from the rear of the engine may be evident. This leak may be caused by a porosity oil leak from the high pressure gallery on the rear of



the engine block.



Action:

REPAIR PROCEDURE



ENGINE POCKET OIL LEAK REPAIR



1. Refer to Workshop Manual. section 303-01A/303-01B. Flexplate, and remove the flexplate.



NOTE:



The use of a locally-sourced dye penetrant may be used to determine the source of the leak.



2. Confirm that there is oil / oil residue in the cavity inside the engine pocket. (Figure 1)



^ If there is no oil / oil residue evident in the cavity inside the engine pocket, the source of the oil leak must be investigated further and repair



as a separate claim.



3. Using suitable material, roughen the cast surface inside the engine pocket. (Figure 1)



4. Using a suitable solvent-type cleaner, thoroughly degrease the cavity inside the engine pocket and from around the rear seal cover.



5. Repeat step 4 five (5) more times.



NOTE:



Consult the Devcon Aluminum Putty instructions regarding hardening times and mixing details; the engine must not be started until the putty



has fully cured.



6. Mix the Devcon Aluminum Putty as instructed.



7. Use a suitable spatula to fill the engine pocket.



^ Ensure the engine pocket corner is thoroughly filled.



8. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 303-01A / 303-01B, Flexplate, and install the flexplate.



CAUTION:



A minimum of four (4) hours of drying time must be allowed prior to starting the engine and performing the road test.



9. Road test the vehicle for approximately 10 miles under a variety of road speed and engine loads.



10. Confirm the engine is no longer leaking oil.
