Roof Opening Panel Frame Corrosion

CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation: Corrosion on the roof opening panel frame, which can be seen when the roof opening panel is open, may be evident.
Cause: This may be caused by insufficient thickness of coating on the frame.
Action: In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
NOTE:
This repair Procedure must be carried out on both sides of the roof opening panel.
1. Remove the roof opening panel (TOPIx Workshop Manual section 501-17: Roof Opening Panel).
2. Using a suitable tool, remove the seal from the edge of the roof opening panel.
3. Move the rubber seal aside, allowing access to the corroded area.

4. NOTE:
Example of the corrosion area.
When the rubber seal has been moved aside, the corroded area can been seen.
5. Using a suitable de-greasing agent, de-grease the area to be worked on.
6. NOTE:
Mask off the roof opening panel aperture and the surrounding area to make sure no dirt or dust will ingress into the vehicle.

Using a suitable tape, mask the rubber seals off to protect from damage.
7. Using a suitable air line, make sure the area is dry and free from dirt and grease.
8. Using 120 - 360 grit sandpaper, sand the corroded area(s) down by hand.
9. Using a suitable air line, make sure the area is dry and free from dirt and dust.
10. Prepare surrounding area for painting.
11. Using a suitable rust converter agent, treat the corroded area completely and allow to dry thoroughly.
12. Using a suitable de-greaser, clean the area.

13. Using a suitable soft-edge masking, mask the are shown and mask off the rest of the surrounding vehicle.
14. Using a suitable aerosol primer, prime the affected areas and allow to dry completely.

15. NOTE:
Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying the next coat of paint
When the aerosol primer has dried completely, use U-POL UP0801 satin Black (or equivalent), apply three (3) coats of paint on each side of
the roof opening panel being repaired.
16. WARNING:
Make sure no damage is caused to the vehicle or tape using the hot air gun.
NOTE:
Using a suitable hot air gun will help with fitting the textured tape to ensure no creases are made to the textured tape.
When the paint has dried completely, apply the textured tape to the affected area.
^ Apply the textured tape to both sides of the vehicle, ensuring it is fitted correctly with no creases or damage.

17. Make sure the textured tape is fitted correctly under both fixed glass panels.
18. Refit the rubber seals.
19. Install the roof opening panel (TOPIx Workshop Manual section 501-17: Roof Opening Panel).
^ Verify roof opening panel operation.
