Nine Useful Lessons About Jaguar X That you'll Never forget

The X-Type was supposed to make Jaguar a big player, but it never sold in the volumes hoped for. Find the right X-Type and you鈥檒l love its ride and handling balance and well stocked cabin. This is easy enough with a workshop lift although tricky to do safely at home but is well worth doing. The touchscreen system and user interface has been overhauled as well – a much more pleasant experience is promised – and there鈥檚 now 10GB of data storage as standard. X-Types are on the thirsty side, especially the bigger engines such as the hefty 2.2 litre diesel, which might give them less appeal than some of their more modern rivals, but few can compete with the desirability and class of the X-Type Jag. The baby Jaguar was always more than that, however, offering a less sober alternative to German rivals, while early editions also featured four-wheel drive as standard. Chevrolet Corvette: More affordable and comes with a powerful V8 engine as standard. Four engine options provide various power and efficiency ratings, with the supercharged V6 topping out at 380 horsepower.

With an MSRP of $46,095, the SE gains a power liftgate, navigation, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster (called an interactive driver display), automatic high-beam headlights, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition. More power is on offer in the two petrol engines, both of which are carried over from the previous range: the P250 and P300, the numbers denoting power in PS and both four-cylinder turbo units. The 2.5 is the more common car and high-milers with long MoTs start at 拢950, rising to 拢1400 for cars with 60-70,000 miles. Jaguar is yet to start with local production of its cars in India. Cars built between 2000 and 2003 can rust badly, though, but still cost more than an equivalent X-Type. BMW 3 Series offers much the same, but trades that 4WD security for a much more involving drive. They do however represent the top of the Jaguar X-Type tree in late-model 2.2 diesel form, for which many vendors will ask as much as 拢5000.

The X-Type estate was added in March 2004, while the pinnacle was reached in June 2004, when a 2.2-litre diesel joined the line-up. The diesel is only available in front-drive form and is generally reliable but can get expensive at high mileage, notably when injector problems arise. The Ford-derived Duratec V6 is a known quantity and really very reliable, with problems generally down to the componentry surrounding it. If the heater air flow seems poor, it may just be down to the cabin filters which are located under the plastic scuttle trim but don鈥檛 always get changed since doing the job involves removing the wiper arms. Oil leaks are common and if you notice a smelly heater then check the crankshaft seal which can be accessed through a hatch in the plastic offside inner arch liner. This means a correspondingly small oil capacity and the slightest leak will leave it running perilously low. A side-effect of the Mondeo platform being designed for front-wheel drive is that the structure didn鈥檛 leave much room for the four-wheel drive hardware and as a consequence the transfer box is on the small side. The sedan鈥檚 trip reset button, which seems too small to begin with, jammed and couldn鈥檛 be pried out.

That, we could live with, but the interior had completely lost its wow factor. The rear seats are placed at a great angle and are equally as comfortable as the front seats. Draining and refilling the transfer box can extend its life greatly, but since there鈥檚 no drain plug provided and even workshop vacuum drain kit won鈥檛 get it all out, the official solution is to tilt the car to a crazy angle. Similarly, spark plugs are hard to access on the rear cylinder bank so can get overlooked in DIY servicing. 2 coupe which had an extended wheelbase to allow occasional seating for 2 rear passengers.
