Misfire/Non-Start - Water Ingress Into Spark Plug Wells - Revised On-Plug Coil Cover



Issue:



This Technical Bulletin has been issued due to a number of V8 4.0L vehicles suffering from water entering the spark plug wells, which could cause a



misfire/non-start situation.



A revised stiffer on-plug coil cover was introduced to prevent water ingress.



Action:



In case of a customer complaint of the above condition on a 2000 MY S-TYPE, within the above VIN range, replace the on-plug coil cover if the



complaints are found to be caused by water ingress.



1. Open hood and fit fender protectors.



2. Open luggage compartment and displace carpet.



3. Record the following customer settings before disconnecting the battery so they can be reset to the customer's preferred setting:



^ Clock 12/24 hr setting



^ CD compress mode (if equipped)



^ Navigation volume defaults to 14 (if equipped)



^ Voice feedback volume defaults to 14 (if equipped)



^ Transmission mode (sport/normal)



^ Radio presets - AM/FM, Bass, Treble settings



^ Compass calibrations and zone setting



Navigation memory will be retained if the battery is not disconnected longer than 24 hours.

4. Remove air cleaner outlet pipe (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 303-12B, SRO 19.10.31).



5. If fitted, remove the Evaporative (EVAP) Emission Canister Purge Valve (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 303-13, SRO



17.15.30).



6. Remove the oil level indicator.



7. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir securing screws and displace reservoir (Illustration 1).



8. Release engine breather hose from securing clip (Illustration 2).



9. Remove on-plug coil cover securing screws.



10. Remove on-plug coil covers.



11. Align new on-plug coil covers to engine.



12. Insert and fully tighten on-plug coil cover securing screws.



13. Install engine breather hose to securing clip.



14. Realign power steering fluid reservoir.



15. Insert and fully tighten power steering fluid reservoir securing screws.



16. Install oil level indicator.



17. If removed, install EVAP Emission Canister Purge Valve (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 303-13, SRO 17.15.30).



18. Install air cleaner outlet pipe (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 303-12B SRO 19.10.31).



19. Connect battery and align luggage compartment carpet to original position.

20. Close luggage compartment lid.



21. Remove tender protectors and close hood.



22. Reset the clock to the correct time before returning the vehicle to the customer.
